Faculty of Private Law

The Faculty of Private Law was established on the basis of the proud traditions and extensive academic heritage of the Department of Civil Law and the Department of Business Law, which have been cultivated throughout nearly 50 years of development of VNU University of Law, from the Faculty of Law under Hanoi University, the Faculty of Law under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, to the Faculty of Law under Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

Following the establishment of VNU University of Law pursuant to Decision No. 1124/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on the establishment of a member university of Vietnam National University, Hanoi on the basis of the Faculty of Law under VNU, in November 2022, the Department of Civil Law was upgraded to the Faculty of Civil Law, while the Department of Business Law was upgraded to the Faculty of Business Law.

In February 2025, the Faculty of Civil Law was renamed the Faculty of Private Law after assuming most of the responsibilities of the Faculty of Business Law pursuant to Resolution No. 185/NQ-HĐT of the University Council of VNU University of Law for the 2024–2029 term, approving the plan for organizational and structural restructuring to implement Resolution No. 18-NQ/TW of 2017 on continuing to reform and streamline the organizational structure of the political system to ensure efficiency and effectiveness at VNU University of Law.

The Faculty of Private Law is responsible for teaching and conducting scientific research in private law, covering legal fields previously under the responsibility of the Faculty of Civil Law, including civil law, marriage and family law, intellectual property law, civil procedure law, and civil judgment enforcement law, as well as private-law-related legal fields previously under the responsibility of the Faculty of Business Law, including commercial law, financial law, banking law, competition law, labor law, social security law, etc.

The Faculty of Private Law currently has 24 full-time lecturers, including 8 lecturers holding the academic rank of Associate Professor, 12 lecturers holding doctoral degrees, 3 lecturers who are PhD candidates with master’s degrees, and 1 lecturer holding a master’s degree, as well as nearly 100 visiting lecturers and collaborators currently working at educational and research institutions, state agencies, law firms, enterprises, etc. The Faculty’s lecturers have high academic reputations, with most having received training or further professional development in countries and territories with well-developed legal systems, such as Russia, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and Taiwan (China), among others. The Faculty’s lecturers are regularly invited to participate in the development, consultation, and critical review of policies and legislation drafted under the leadership of state agencies in the fields of private law.

Regarding specialized training, in addition to private law courses at the undergraduate level, the Faculty of Private Law is currently responsible for the Master’s and Doctoral programs in Civil Law and Civil Procedure Law, as well as the Master’s and Doctoral programs in Economic Law. The Faculty is currently taking the lead in developing proposals for new training programs to meet the increasingly high demands of society, such as a Master’s program in Intellectual Property Law, and in the future, will coordinate with other Faculties to develop a proposal for a Master’s program in Health Law.

The Faculty’s lecturers have successfully completed numerous scientific research projects at various levels, including national, ministerial, Vietnam National University, university, and municipal levels. In addition, the Faculty’s lecturers have published numerous monographs, reference books, and hundreds of articles in specialized domestic and international legal academic journals. Currently, the Faculty of Private Law has a relatively comprehensive system of textbooks serving the University’s various training programs. In addition, many monographs authored by the Faculty’s lecturers are widely used for teaching and research at educational institutions across the country.
