On the afternoon of 5 June 2026, VNU University of Law held a talk titled “Development Trends in Criminal Law and Health Criminal Law in the French Republic.”
The main speaker was Professor Bruno Py of the University of Lorraine, France, Director of the Master’s Program in Health Law, co-founder of the Master’s Program in Criminal Law, and legal advisor to the French Medical Council.
In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Tien Viet, Vice Rector of VNU University of Law, thanked Professor Bruno Py for taking the time to attend and share his expertise with the University’s lecturers, researchers and students. He described the topic as academically and practically significant, particularly as issues of criminal law, health law and legal liability in medicine are drawing growing attention in Vietnam.
Professor Bruno Py discussed major trends in contemporary French criminal law, including the expanding scope of criminalization, the role of human rights in criminal justice, simplified procedures for handling criminal cases, and new challenges arising from digital technology, artificial intelligence and personal data.
Discussion also focused on health criminal law, a growing interdisciplinary field in France covering patient autonomy, informed consent to treatment, professional confidentiality, the legal liability of healthcare workers, medical crime and the role of forensic evidence.
The event drew a large number of lecturers and researchers from VNU University of Law, along with legal and management specialists from central hospitals in Hanoi. The discussion session was lively, offering a range of valuable academic and practical perspectives.
