2018 School of Law “Green Summer” Voluntary Program

So, the 2018 Green Summer has come to an end, after two weeks of living and spending time with the villagers, two weeks filled with the work of the youth of the Law Faculty – bringing love to remote villages, reaching out to children living difficult lives yet still beaming with smiles.

Tu Ly Commune, Da Bac District, Hoa Binh Province,… is indeed a land of mountains and hills, of what is called hardship,… It may not be the most difficult place in our familiar S-shaped country, but it is certainly enough to leave many people stunned and contemplative. Whether nature is harsh or people are extraordinarily resilient, whether the children are truly innocent or have become accustomed to “overcoming the realities of life to reach the future”…

For this year’s Law Faculty Green Summer Team, however, 21 students, 21 passionate hearts, representing the youth of the Law Faculty, truly left a beautiful impression in the hearts of the people of Tu Ly. Wearing the green shirts of the Law Faculty, they joined hands to build the “Lighting Up the Countryside” project in Chau Hamlet, helping local people travel more conveniently. This was followed by activities to clean up and repair inter-village roads in Mo La Hamlet and Tinh Hamlet, as well as supporting disadvantaged households in harvesting agricultural products. The volunteer team also organized many lively summer activities for local children, as well as an extremely exciting mini sports event at the Tinh Hamlet cultural house… In particular, the team provided volunteer English classes for primary school students at the primary school site in Tu Ly Commune during the Green Summer activities.

But making such a successful Green Summer possible was not only the result of the efforts of each individual member and the sense of responsibility of the team leaders, but also the care and support of the Faculty’s leadership from the early days of preparation until the final day of the program. The special visit by the Faculty’s staff and lecturers on August 10 was a wonderful example of this.

The meeting with the team began at 2:00 p.m. at the Tinh Hamlet cultural house, Tu Ly Commune, Da Bac District – which was also where the volunteers were stationed and lived. Representatives of the Faculty Party Committee, including Comrade Tran Anh Tu, and the lecturers devotedly inquired about and shared with the team members the significance of volunteer activities in general and the Green Summer program in particular… The sincere and intimate words shared by the lecturers further encouraged the enthusiasm of the 21 young hearts wearing the green shirts of the 2018 Law Faculty.

Immediately afterward, representatives of the Faculty leadership met with Secretary of the Party Committee of Tu Ly Commune – Comrade Nguyen Van Tuyen; Comrade Dinh Thi Kieu – Member of the Executive Committee of the Hoa Binh Provincial Youth Union – Secretary of the Da Bac District Youth Union; together with commune officials at the Tu Ly Commune People’s Committee, and offered incense to the fallen heroes at the commune memorial. This beautiful moment not only strengthened the confidence of the Green Summer Team but was also highly appreciated by local residents. Through this, the visit became even more meaningful.

In particular, the participation of the lecturers in the intimate cultural gala between the Law Faculty Green Summer Team and the people of Tu Ly Commune on the evening of August 10 was especially significant. The cultural performance truly turned Green Summer into a bridge between the volunteers and local residents, between the Faculty leadership and the authorities of Tu Ly Commune, and much more…

The visit by the Faculty Party Committee served as a concluding remark for the 2018 Green Summer in particular and reflected the Faculty leadership’s sentiments toward Green Summer in general. It was a tremendous source of motivation and a hopeful promise for the Law Faculty Green Summer programs in the years to come. It showed that the Faculty leadership always strives to create an environment for the comprehensive development of students – alongside learning and research, also caring about and emphasizing the promotion of student youth activities. And Green Summer is such a deeply humane and emotional volunteer journey.

The 2018 Green Summer has come to a close, and we look forward to next year’s Green Summer.
